• New Whiteboards Improve Patient Communication

    Whiteboards group
New Whiteboards will help improve communications between staff at the facility, and between the staff and the patients they are caring for. Hospital Director of Nursing (DON) Stacey Weinkauf said all of the hospital staff had input on the design and information included on the white boards, and they are looking forward to using them.
This information not only includes the patient’s preferred name, their doctor and nurse, but also a pain management communication chart, special diet instructions, and family contact information. There is also a space for notes or questions for the provider or nurse from the family and/or patient.
“Whiteboards can play a valuable role in improving patient care, team work and communication,
especially with the patient. The area for family contact information and questions
is one of the most important pieces of the new whiteboards,” said Weinkauf.
Hospital staff pictured with the whiteboards are, left to right, Stacey Weinkauf, Kristine Schularick,
Dr. Chakravorty, Sherrie Lee, Melissa Egger, and Toni Cam.

  • Recognized for Excellence in Patient Safety

    Safety Award

Appleton Area Health Services is recognized by the Minnesota Hospital Association (MHA) for superior performance in patient safety as part of its Hospital Engagement Network 2.0. The MHA Hospital Engagement Network 2.0 is working to reduce hospital acquired conditions by 40 percent and readmissions by 20 percent.
Appleton Area Health Services has committed resources to improve on 8 of the 10 focus areas, including adverse drug events; catheter-associated urinary tract infections; central-line-associated blood stream infections; injuries from falls and immobility; obstetrical adverse events, including early elective deliveries; pressure ulcers; preventable readmissions; surgical site infections; venous thromboembolism; and ventilator-associated pneumonia. Appleton Area Health Services was among 22 hospitals recognized by MHA for demonstrating high performance on six or more hospital acquired conditions.
“Appleton Area Health Services is helping to further strengthen patient safety in Minnesota and contributing to the state’s well-deserved reputation for high quality health care,” said Lawrence Massa, MHA President and CEO.
To keep our patients safe and numbers low for hospital acquired infections, Appleton Area Health Services has implemented a hand hygiene improvement project which includes ongoing education and quality assurance audits. Another intervention includes a project with our providers for early sepsis (a whole body response to an infection) recognition. For the hospital, we recently ordered new communication whiteboards that will go in the patient rooms to promote more open communication among the patient, families, nurses and providers to ensure the safest care including the reduction in falls or any adverse events. The most recent project we are working on is workplace violence which will include training with staff on potentially violent or abusive situations and safety guidelines for response to and de-escalation of an act of violence. We are also including our local law enforcement in this implementation process.
“Our team is working hard as an active participant in the Minnesota Hospital Engagement Network and the Partnership for Patients. Our goal is to focus proactively to ensure the safest care for all of our patients and residents and to implement these safety initiatives because we want to always provide the best quality care for our patients and residents.” said Janell Thomson, Safety/Quality/Risk Manager, Appleton Area Health Services.
