Services
- Respite Bed Care
Respite care refers to short-term care paid for by private individuals in the hospital setting provided to those persons who are cared for primarily in their own home, or are awaiting nursing home placement. Services range from board and care to skilled nursing care. - Swing Bed Care
Swing bed care provides a skilled level of care to those patients who cannot return to their own home following an acute hospital stay. Many times this is due to a continued need for skilled nursing care, physical, occupational or speech therapy, or skilled management of a continuing illness. - Outreach
Appleton Area Health Services’ Outreach Program offers patients the opportunity to see a variety of specialists locally, allowing convenient access along with quality healthcare services.- Surgery, Colonoscopies & Gastroscopies – We offer same-day procedures and surgeries as well as surgeries that require extended hospital stays.

- e-Psychiatry & e-Psychology
- e-Psychiatry and ePsychology is available through the Center for Rural Mental Health Studies (University of Minnesota – Duluth) and is a form of psychological intervention delivered via information and communication technology. Physician referrals required for this two-way video technology service.

- Emergency Room
The emergency room has one bay for trauma and one treatment room. We provide our patients the best care possible, with state-of-the-art technology. All physicians and RNs are ACLS certified. During the first critical minutes of emergency care, two heads are better than one. The around-the-clock e-Emergency team is always available to the AAHS team through Avera in Sioux Falls and ensures access to immediate emergency care and supports your local providers through access to a consult on request. Through two-way video technology, e-Emergency makes available board-certified emergency physicians and emergency-trained nurses to assist local providers in treating trauma, heart attack, stroke and other critical conditions.

Services are available Monday through Friday, 8:00 until 4:30 in a fully modern, equipped rehabilitation department. Professional, licensed therapists will assist in developing a treatment program customized to assist you in your return to normal daily activities whether from loss of movement, strength or pain control. - Occupational Therapy
A professional licensed Occupational Therapist is available by appointment to assist clients in rehabilitation needs. Specialized training in vestibular rehabilitation and lymphedema management also available. - Speech Therapy
Speech Therapy is available to homecare clients, long-term care residents, outpatients and hospital inpatients. We evaluate and treat speech, language and swallowing disorders. Some common reasons for needing speech therapy as an adult include brain injury, CVA, Parkinson’s disease, pneumonia and other neurological conditions. Children need therapy for articulation disorders, language disorders, feeding difficulties, autism, stuttering and other disorders.

Our lab team provides routine and emergency testing for our health care providers 24 hours a day. Lab staff includes certified medical technologists and medical laboratory technicians. Our lab performs the following testing in-house – chemistry testing blood profiles, hematology, blood banking, breath alcohols, DOT, pre-employment drug screen collections, urinalysis and consultation services for employers needing assistance with their drug testing programs. We also serve as a transfusion service for individuals needing blood or blood products. Cytology, pap smears, and tissue testing is performed at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, Minnesota. - Radiology

Kay Davidson RPh, has been the pharmacist at AAHS since 2007. Kay oversees the department and enters & records medications in our electronic medical record (EMR). Our EMR has built in safe guards for preventing drug interactions and provides efficient administration of medication to patients. - Grief Counseling
Brenda Wiese provides one-on-one counseling to persons of all ages who may be experiencing grief and loss. There is no charge for the services provided by the Grief Center and a referral is not necessary. Grief Counseling is available at Appleton Area Health Services through Rice Hospice, Willmar, Minnesota. Appointments with Brenda can be made through the Rice Grief Center, Willmar, MN by calling 320-231-4714. - Hospice
Hospice provides care to both patients and families when a family member has been medically diagnosed with a terminal progressive disease. Hospice is available at Appleton Area Health Services through Rice Hospice, Willmar, Minnesota. Cindy Enke is the coordinator for Appleton. Rice Hospice Services are available through AAHS by calling 320-289-2422. - Ambulance
AAHS partners with The Appleton Ambulance Service to provide full basic life support to the community and surrounding area. In addition to full 24-hour emergency and non-emergency service coverage, the ambulance service provides hospital-to-hospital transfers to a number of communities, including Willmar, St. Cloud, Minneapolis, Sioux Falls, and Watertown. The staff also gives ground support for helicopter and fixed-wing transfers. The service operates two fully-equipped ambulances that include heart monitor/defibrillators.
